Dr. Doris Maier, specialist in orthopedics and physical therapy, medical director of the BG Unfallklinik Murnau.

With over 30 years of experience in paraplegiology and spinal surgery, as well as numerous scientific projects, she has had a decisive influence on the care of people with spinal cord injuries.

After studying medicine in Würzburg and completing her specialist training, Dr. Maier specialized early on in the treatment and research of spinal cord injuries. Since 2008, she has headed the Center for Spinal Cord Injuries, which became independent in 2020.

She is not only active in surgical and conservative treatment, but also advocates for modern approaches in neurorehabilitation and regeneration, data science, and translational research.

“Close cooperation between medicine and orthopedic technology is essential,” emphasizes Dr. Maier. The patient is at the center of their work: interprofessional teams from orthopedics, neuro-urology, respiratory medicine, nursing, and orthopedic technology work hand in hand to enable those affected to enjoy the best possible quality of life and a quick return to everyday life.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Maier is active in national and international professional associations such as the German Society for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU), the German-speaking Medical Society for Paraplegia (DMGP), the German Society for Interprofessional Medical Aid Supply (DGIHV), and the International Society of Spinal Cord Injury (ISCoS). In 2022, she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Indian Spinal Cord Society (SCS-India) for her outstanding work.

In her private life, Dr. Maier finds balance in nature—whether hiking in the Alps or skiing and cross-country skiing in winter. Her passion for interprofessional collaboration and innovation makes her a driving force that will shape OTWorld 2026 into a central place for progress and inspiration.
